Squash formerly known as squash rackets is a ball sport that is played by two players or four players. It is played in a four-walled court with racquets and a small, hollow rubber ball.
The name of the sport is a reference to the “squashable” which is the softball used to play the game.
When played with four players, it is called double squash. To play the game, players must alternate in striking the ball with their racket. Players must hit the ball onto the playable surfaces of the 4 walls of the court.
The World Squash Federation (WSF) is the governing body of Squash and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Despite a number of applications, Squash still isn’t a part of the Olympic Games.
Supporters of this popular sport are still lobbying for its incorporation in a future Olympic program.
Since it is played with racquets and balls, you could also say this is a racquet sport. A racquet is a piece of equipment with a frame and strings inside. If it’s solid, then it is probably a bat.
It uses a small rubber ball which squashes. This is probably where the name comes from and is played on a court.
Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about the equipment especially the balls because there are different types of balls. I’ll cover those in future articles.
For now, stick to the basics.
Squash is an indoor sport and played on a court. The court is normally white, but it doesn’t have to be. The court normally has red lines, but they don’t have to be red. They can be blue and also different colors.
Sometimes professionals play on glass court which allows people to watch from all different angles and it is pretty cool if you do that. Seriously, it is freaking awesome!
There are courts all over the world but often they are available in your public or local public sports center. But there are dedicated clubs where you can just go and play and the advantage of going there is that you know you are going to meet lots of people who want to play squash.
These facilities look fantastic. There are leagues and ladders and possibly coaching and a bunch of other things to make sure to check out what’s available in your local area.
Number Of Players
Now, the game itself can normally consist of two players you and your opponent. But you can play doubles which are of course 2 players per team against another 2 players just like in tennis for example.
That’s normally played on the same sized court, but you can get doubles court but that’s less common. A proper doubles court is much wider than a normal court.
Your objective is to hit the ball so that it hits the front wall, stays within the lines and is difficult for your opponent to get.
The ball can hit the sidewall or the back wall first except on the serve. And again, just like the equipment, don’t worry if you don’t know anything about the rules, I’ll be covering the basic rules in future articles.
Now there is a lot of variety when it comes to playing squash. Because you can hit the ball very close to the wall, you can hit it low, you can hit it high, you can hit hard, you can hit it soft, you can even hit it off the back wall.
Now there are two things that squash players have to worry about that other racquet sports generally don’t and that is number 1 the opponent and number 2 the back wall.
When I say worry about them, you have to keep in mind that you are in an enclosed area and there is another person. So, the swing you use and for the movement of the ball, you have to consider the people and the back wall.
That is why squash players have a different way of swinging in squash. It is very different from tennis for example which can have a much bigger swing.
And again, don’t worry if you don’t know how to swing because I’ll also be covering that in a future article.
One of the main things about squash is the sidewall which most of the players try and hit the ball very close to the wall and definitely try to hit the ball into the back.
You start the game with a service that means you stand in a special place that you hit it against the front wall and that’s it.
That’s really all that squash is.
But if this article didn’t answer a question that you might have or if you have like doubt about what squash is, please leave a comment in the comment section and I’ll do my best to answer it as quickly and as concisely as possible.
If you’re fairly new to squash, please consider bookmarking as I’ll be releasing a new article every now and then.
And also welcome to this course community. I’m sure you’re going to have a lot of fun. Again, this isn’t a how to play squash article, so don’t worry if you didn’t understand a lot of the stuff that I’ve talked about.
